Town Overview
Panajachel — often simply “Pana” — is a charming lakeside town in the highlands of southwestern Guatemala, nestled on the northeastern shore of Lake Atitlán. Sitting at roughly 1,600 m above sea level, Panajachel serves as the main gateway for visitors exploring the lake, surrounding volcanoes, and the region’s indigenous villages.
Once a pre-Columbian settlement of the local Maya, the town’s colonial-era heritage remains visible — notably through the 16th-century church built by Spanish missionaries, whose restored stone façade and old-town plaza evoke a layered past.
