Where and what is LARA and Tropico?
I have had the good fortune to call Atitlan home for the last twenty four years. Atitlan.com developed out of the affection and fascination I have for this delightful corner of the world and for the Mayans who live here.
I started Atitlan.com in 1997 basically with the idea of trying to make enough money to not have to go back to the US to work. I speak English and I had a computer and a camera so I thought: "Why not?". Ten years later, I'm still at it and I still haven't gone back to the US except to visit.
I'll admit it wasn't a brilliant business plan. Still, it did survive while many a dot-com crashed and burned. With the formation of Lake Atitlan Resort Association, Atitlan.com, as a hotel guide, focuses on the best accommodations the lake has to offer.
Lake Atitlan is indeed the most beautiful lake in the world, but it is much more than just that. Atitlan.com is also a travel magazine through which I can share my attraction to and knowledge of this beautiful lake and the Mayans who live here.
I started the Tropical Travel Association (Tropico.biz) and a number of affiliate sites, four years ago building on the success Atitlan.com and LARA have enjoyed. I came here the first time on the "Gringo Trail" over thirty years ago and have been here pretty much full time ever since 1983.
